The Voice-Ledgers
In Adon, war and seafaring are celebrated with great fanfare, with songs, banners, and abundant festivities. But survival has always depended on more discreet things: negotiations at court, envoys to distant kingdoms, messengers traveling the roads…
Over generations, a strong tradition has been forged in Adon: men are expected to win the battle, while women are expected to make the battle worthwhile.
The result is not a rigid law, but a traditional norm that everyone willingly abides by. Businesses, warehouses, contracts, and account books are often supervised by women who have proven themselves highly capable in these matters for generations. The most prominent among them are commonly referred to as the “Voice-Ledgers” and are in the direct service of the Crown.
They are the people responsible for speaking on behalf of the kingdom in matters of negotiations, foreign policy, trade, and even taxation. They have a status equal to that of an ambassador or army marshall and are highly respected and even admired (by girls who aspire to such a role).
It is widely accepted that anyone with talent can perform any role, but in practice the kingdom is governed by this division of expectations, an agreement that stems less from ideology than from the harsh necessity of the north when men go off to battle, leaving women behind to ensure that everything runs smoothly and the kingdom continues to function.
