Minister for Foreign Affairs
Portugal would like to initiate discussions with Sweden about the right to approach various Swedish companies for joint venture production of various Swedish products in Portugal, for marketing of these products in Portugal and Spain, as well as in Africa and South America. If this is acceptable, we ask that Sweden sets up a forum for the Portuguese Ministries of Trade and Industry to meet with the companies that are interested, and that Portugal has identified as interesting.
To the Government of Portugal:
Sweden welcomes Portugal’s proposal and appreciates the initiative to deepen our bilateral economic relations through industrial cooperation.
Sweden is open to exploring joint ventures focused on commercialization, logistics, and post-production services of Swedish products in Portugal, particularly for distribution across the Iberian Peninsula, Africa, and South America.
We suggest that the cooperation focuses on the following areas:
- Distribution partnerships involving Portuguese entities as commercial agents or logistics hubs.
- Assembly or customization of non-sensitive civilian products under Swedish license and supervision.
- Joint ventures in marketing and after-sales support, especially in emerging markets.
However, Sweden attaches great importance to retaining core production, engineering, and R&D activities within its territory. As such, any collaboration involving Swedish industrial technology must preserve:
- Swedish control over intellectual property and patents.
- High-value manufacturing and final quality control in Sweden.
To advance these discussions, Sweden proposes establishing a bilateral task force with representatives from both governments and relevant industries, to define the scope, sectors, and modalities of cooperation.
We look forward to your response and to building a mutually beneficial framework that supports innovation, employment, and sustainable economic growth for both countries.
