Tales from Pestin

A small wharf at Pestin-Grad. Ships of the námořnictvo Pestinu (Navy of Pestin) are often seen here or in the spacious regional harbour. They bring with them news from other coastal towns, or sometimes escort heavily-laden merchantmen.

The Year 481

From the Journal of Vladislav z Litoměřic, Custos Navium Ducis (Keeper of the Duke’s Ships)

Today we laid the bones of a new ship. All was in accordance and as expected. The Keeper was, for once, not delayed by the marketplace outside this shipyard’s gates. There is reason to believe the Sovereign and the Huntress favor this ship and those who will come to sail in her; we have heard the Keeper herself spoke of favorable portents and omens observed today.

It has been a lean year. Prosperity eludes this great Republic. There is talk among the workers that perhaps we have displeased or angered the Pantheon. I do not care for such tales and have expressed as such. But one must exert great effort to silence a rumor as swift as winter wind. I have instead reserved my energy for this ship.

I am told there will be more. That the seers for His Excellency, the Duke, have foretold the coming of a great many, freely traveling up and down this mighty river that bisects the land. Perhaps they were right. As master of this yard I can only look forward to the truth of such tales and stories. Perhaps my son, when of age, will even take up the hammer, the maul, and the papers and ink of this craft and work on ships like this one.

May the Sovereign and the Huntress look after this ship, and all who sail aboard her. May she find seas that test her bones, honor, and glory. May she survive to reach port. Look after them, Lord and Lady. Into your care we shall one day deliver her.
